Select brightly coloured gear with distinctive designs to make life easier for younger kids. Backpacks and pencil cases that are hard to miss go a long way towards helping them keep track of their belongings. Label everything and explain the concept of “lost property” to them so they know how to find lost items. And make sure they know how to open their lunchbox and drink bottle.

Terms of endearment
Let kids show their true colours as they head back to school. School supplies that reflect their sporting and other interests help keep them happy. If they’re prone to separation anxiety, slip a little album of family snaps in their backpack to flip through when they’re feeling lonely.

Essential items
Be organised and lay out everything the night before. Make sure littlies have a spare pair of socks and undies in case of accidents.

Homework help
Older kids will be set homework, so it’s a good idea to stock up on extra stationery supplies to keep at home. If possible, create a special homework area away from distractions such as TV. Make sure the space is quiet and well-lit.
