Formal Entertaining Cheese Platters

A classic platter includes portions each of creamy Brie or Camembert, a bloomy blue and Cheddar. Within these classic varieties there are many variations. For example, an Ashed Goat milk pyramid, a soft washed rind, peppered Cheddar and a firm blue cheese creates a well-balanced platter with taste and texture differences. Remember, size, shape, texture and colour make a platter not only appealing to the eye but to the palate.
As a rule of thumb, 25 grams of each cheese per person is plenty with no more than four cheeses overall. As always, the important thing is to try new ideas. If you have any questions, your in-store Coles Cheese Specialist is always happy to help. (They love cheese just as much as you do!)

Mix up different crackers, breads and fruit. Soft creamy Brie on a crunchy fruit and nut cracker bread offers a delightful contrast in textures, for example. Fresh grapes not only compliment any cheese but also cleanse the palate between cheese types.
Picnic Cheese Platters

In the Great Outdoors, you can make things a little simpler and fuss-free without sacrificing taste. Look for different varieties and combinations of Cheddars, Swiss, Edam and Gouda. (Try a single ‘hero’ cheese as a centrepiece and play with the supports!)
Soft marinated cheeses and fettas spooned directly from the pot make a nice gourmet touch without making a mess. Fresh grapes, dried apples, apricots, figs, Muscatel grapes and dates are all easy to pack into small containers to place on your platter when you arrive at your picnic spot.

Don’t overdo it, keep it simple! Use an oversized platter to display and cut the cheese. It’s best to avoid strawberries and kiwi fruits as these are acidic and detract from the delicate and creamy varieties.

Pre-cut cubes, slices and batons of firm cheeses before you leave home. Look for small, boxed Camembert pre-cut into wedges and ready to serve from the packaging. Toothpicks are always a welcome addition to any picnic basket.
