Coles Baby Club

Family Foods - Coles Baby Club

From around 12 months of age, your baby should be ready to move onto eating family foods. These are the foods your family enjoys, with a few exceptions:

  • dairy foods should be full fat and not reduced or lite varieties at this stage;
  • if you have a family history of food allergy, delay introduction of whole eggs, and egg white;
  • avoid small hard foods such as nuts, uncooked pieces of carrot or other foods that may increase the risk of baby choking.

Cow’s milk can be introduced as a drink from 12 months of age – seek advice from your health professional.

Expand your baby’s palate with a variety of foods including breads and cereals, pasta and rice, fruit and vegetables, and protein foods such as meat/chicken/fish; dairy foods such as cheese or yogurt; and legumes such as beans and peas.

Encourage self-feeding by offering finger foods such as soft fruit segments; softly cooked pieces of vegetables; ribbon sandwiches or toast fingers. Encourage toddlers to use a spoon for feeding plus drink from a cup and be sure to supervise your child when eating or drinking. Expect a mess and know that it’s all in the name of practice!
