You will spend a lot of time changing nappies, so it’s wise to create a comfortable environment for you and the baby, where everything is easily accessible. Be prepared for a well-equipped, ever-ready nappy bag to go everywhere baby goes.
Baby change know-how
- Gather everything you need and place it within easy reach
- Always keep one hand on baby (in later months you might move to a change mat on the floor)
- Put powder onto your hands first and then apply it to your baby, to reduce the risk of baby breathing in powder
- Always wipe a baby girl from front to back to prevent any cross infection
- Avoid being ‘sprayed’ by covering boys with cloth when without nappy
- Put a toy or mobile above the change area to keep baby amused and to reduce squirming
- Keep lotions, pins, creams and bags within your reach but outside of baby’s
- NEVER, for any reason, leave your child unattended on a change table
Don’t be rash
Ways to avoid nappy rash:
- Change wet or soiled nappies straight away
- Ensure baby’s bottom is washed with a soft cloth at each nappy change
- Pat dry and leave uncovered until completely dry
- Apply a barrier cream
- Give baby nappy-free time each day
- If using cloth nappies, tumble drying makes them softer
- If rash is present, avoid plastic pilchers until it clears up
