When to call the doctor

New parents often fret as to whether a problem is ‘serious enough’ to call the doctor. If in any doubt, ring, but certainly seek immediate medical attention if you see any of the following:

  • Convulsion or fit
  • Persistent screaming that cannot be calmed
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Any lump or bump that is painful to the baby
  • Sudden loss of interest in feeding or surroundings
  • Sudden occurrence of: rash, vomiting, diarrhoea, high temperature or unusual-smelling urine
