Hospital bag checklist

For labour:

  • Loose t-shirt or nightie (two – one for after the birth)
  • Underwear
  • Toiletries
  • Drinks and snacks
  • Camera and film
  • Lip Balm
  • Reading material (magazines, papers – you may not feel like reading the latest best selling novel!)
  • Birth plan (if you have one)
  • Shorts (for your partner if you are going to use the bath or shower)

You may find the following things useful, but aren't essential. Your hospital may have some of these things:

  • A large hand mirror (if you would like to see your baby being born)
  • CD Player and favourite music
  • Aromatherapy Oils

For you:

  • Nightdresses (front-opening for easy breastfeeding access)
  • Dressing Gown
  • Slippers
  • Toiletries
  • Comfortable clothes and footwear (you won't be back to your original size)
  • Underwear
  • Bike shorts (great for your tummy muscles)
  • Maternity pads (three packets)
  • Maternity Bras (two)
  • Breast pads (one box)
  • One tin of formula, two bottles, teats and caps (if you are bottle-feeding)
  • Tissues
  • Heat pack
  • Phone card and list of phone numbers
  • Medicare card and Private Health fund details
  • Reading material
  • Watch
  • Pen and paper
  • Plastic bags (to take home gifts or send washing home in)

For baby:

  • Body suits (four)
  • Singlets (four)
  • Cotton or Muslin wraps (three)
  • Socks
  • Hat
  • Blanket
  • Nappies (if not supplied by hospital)
  • Scratch mittens
