While palm oil itself is a useful product, unsustainable farming practices have a negative impact on the environment and wildlife in developing countries where palms are grown.
We’re increasingly sourcing grocery products and fresh produce from environmentally responsible growers and suppliers, improving efficiencies within our supply chain, reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our business, and focusing on waste reduction and recycling.
When developing new products, we will use sustainable palm oil wherever possible and where we cannot use sustainable palm oil, we will use alternative oils and ingredients. This approach encourages palm oil producers to move to sustainable practices whilst supporting the livelihoods of those communities dependent on the palm oil industry. Where sustainable palm oil is present in our products, we will label it as such.
We have developed Coles soap bars with coconut oil; none of our Coles soap bar range contains palm oil. This includes:
We have removed palm oil from many of our bakery products, including Ginger Kisses and Lamingtons, and also from Coles Choc Top and Coles Sultanas.
We also have a number of product in our Coles Brand & Smart Buy ranges that use sustainable palm oil including;
Coles has also begun purchasing sustainable palm oil certificates from GreenPalm to offset our palm oil use. GreenPalm has been endorsed by the RSPO as the official broker for the trade in sustainable palm oil certificates and aims to promote certified sustainable palm oil, prevent the destruction of the rainforests and support the RSPO.

Although our use of GreenPalm certificates has been recognised by organisations like WWF, we have committed to move to certified sustainable palm oil in all Coles branded products by 2015. In order to achieve this, we are working closely with our suppliers to ensure that we can deliver on this commitment. We are a member of the Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and have embraced the Principles & Criteria for Sustainable Palm Oil Production. See the RSPO website for further details. We also participate in the WWF Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard. Visit WWF’s website for the latest scorecard.
Presently, certified sustainable palm oil only accounts for around 15% of global total palm oil supply, so there is a gap between the quantity required by all product manufacturers and the amount that is available. This is why we need to work progressively with suppliers to secure a supply of sustainable palm oil. While we work to address the supply issue, we have taken steps to ensure we operate in an environmentally sustainable way.
