Halloween fun with Aussie pumpkins

Halloween festivities originate from the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain, a celebration to end the harvest season. The name derives from All Hallow' Eve or All Saints Eve and it was believed that on October 31st the boundaries of the living and the dead would cross and the dead would come back causing mayhem. People would light fires to ward off ghosts and began wearing costumes and masks to imitate evil spirits.

Today, Halloween is celebrated with activities such as trick-or-treating, costume parties and carving pumpkins. The tradition of carving pumpkins is supposed to recreate light flickering over peat bogs, called will-o-the-wips or Jack-o'-lantern.
