Choice of Checkout Bags

Recycled checkout bags
As an extension to the checkout bag recycling program and following a trial commencing in Tasmania in September 1997, all Coles stores are using large plastic checkout bags with recycled content. Bags are made from clean 'post industrial waste' (this is clean factory waste, half new and half off-cut and scrap). These bags are available in all Coles Supermarkets.

Checkout Bag Alternatives
The following gives a brief description of the checkout bag alternatives available at Coles Supermarkets. Every time you use one of these alternatives, you are reducing the number of plastic checkout bags going into landfill and the environment. By selecting to use these alternatives, you are helping Coles to help the environment.

If you find that the alternatives below are not available in your store, please speak to your local Checkout or Store Manager who will order some in.

Go-Green Bags
Go-Green Bags are available at all Coles Supermarkets for only $1.79 each. The very popular non-woven polypropylene Go-Green Bag has a sturdy base and can hold more than a standard plastic bag. The bags are easy to clean and can be recycled through the checkout bag recycling bins. The Go-Green Bags have been designed to operate with standard packaging frames. These bags are available to purchase in all Coles Supermarkets.

Calico Bags
Coles Calico Bags have been available in stores for some time. The bags have been specially designed to operate with our standard packing frames. The bag is designed to fold into itself for easy storage and can be purchased for $1.79. These bags are available to purchase in all Coles Supermarkets.

Paper Bags
In December 1997, introduced reusable paper bags, called EnvirocareTM into the business. The bag costs 14 cents, but a rebate of 2 cents is given every time the customer reuses it at the store. Customers can use the bags many times. These bags are available to purchase in all Coles Supermarkets.

Smart Box
Currently in trial phase in selected Victorian and Western Australian stores, the Smart Box is soon to be rolled out in all Tasmanian stores. The Smart Box is a heavy duty, long life plastic box made from recycled plastic which can hold more than two times the amount of a standard checkout bag. The Smart Box works in conjunction with a specially designed trolley. Boxes can be purchased at trial stores and then stored in your boot or used at home until you return for your next shop. Coles will be monitoring the trial of the Smart Box to determine its potential application across all stores nationwide.

Future Checkout Bag Alternatives
Coles is always looking to provide you with more choices so that we have something that suits your needs. Coles has the following new ideas to replace current checkout bags coming soon to a store near you:

  • Go Green Box – this sturdy, waxed lined green cardboard box is made from fully recycled material, is fully recyclable and is environmentally friendly
  • R Bag – a new multi-use sturdy plastic bag made from HPDE plastic designed in the same size and shape as the Go Green Bag.
