Container Deposit Scheme

A Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) is a government initiative where you can receive a 10 cent refund for every eligible container you return at a Deposit Scheme Collection Point.

These schemes aim to help reduce litter and increase recycling.

All Australian states and territories have a CDS in place, with Tasmania's launching on 1 May 2025.

Coles has been working with the relevant CDS operators in each state and territory to locate sites where we can host a reverse vending machine close to our supermarkets to make it more convenient for our customers to return their eligible containers and receive a refund.

Reverse vending machines read the barcodes of eligible containers and provide a 10 cent refund for each container returned.

Depending on where the refund is collected, you may be able to donate your refund to charity or receive your refund by electronic transfer to your financial account, or as a Coles CDS voucher.

The Container Deposit Scheme has some great benefits

More money in your pocket

Get money back for each can, bottle and other container you deposit which can be used to  buy more of the things you love.

Great education for kids

Teach little ones about the importance of recycling and reward them at the same time.

Better for the planet

By recycling your containers you're not only helping yourself but you can also feel good about doing your bit for the planet.
