Container Deposit Scheme

A Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) is a system where you can return empty drink containers such as bottles or cans to a refund point and earn a 10-cent refund for every eligible container returned.

These schemes provide a convenient way to recycle a range of drink containers and reduce litter in our environment.

Most states and territories in Australia have a CDS, with Victoria now scheduled to launch November 2023 and Tasmania during 2024.

Coles has been working with CDS operators in relevant jurisdictions to locate sites where we can host a reverse vending machine close to our supermarkets.

Reverse vending machines read the barcodes of eligible containers and provide a 10-cent refund for each one returned.

Depending on where the refund is collected, it may be able to be donated to a charity, sent by electronic transfer to your financial account or redeemed and used for shopping in your local Coles supermarket.

The Container Deposit Scheme has some great benefits

More money in your pocket

Get money back for each can, bottle and other container you deposit which can be used to  buy more of the things you love.

Great education for kids

Teach little ones about the importance of recycling and reward them at the same time.

Better for the planet

By recycling your containers you're not only helping yourself but you can also feel good about doing your bit for the planet.
