Homemade pizza dough recipe

Pizza is one of the world’s most beloved foods, appearing all over the globe in one form or another—so much so that pizza has been adapted by all kinds of cuisines to showcase local and traditional ingredients in this familiar, dough-loaded form. But even the most exotic pizza toppings are nothing without a good base, which is why learning how to make pizza dough is essential no matter where you are in the world.

If you’re craving a classic and have some spare time, this pizza dough recipe is quick and easy. It requires just 5 ingredients and yields a crispy, golden base perfect for stacking all of your favourite toppings (pineapple included).

How to make pizza dough at home

To make your dough starter, combine the dry yeast, sugar, and three-quarters of a cup of warm water in a small jug. Allow to stand until the mixture is frothy (about 10 minutes). The yeast microbes will eat the sugar, producing carbon dioxide. This is what makes your pizza base rise and creates gluten when mixed with the flour for that iconic pizza dough stretch.

Combine flour and salt in a large bowl, making a well in the centre. Add the yeast mixture and oil, and mix until a dough begins to form. When all the pizza dough ingredients are combined, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead. Add more flour if the dough becomes too sticky. Continue kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic—about 6 minutes. Place the dough ball in a large, oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap or a tea towel. Leave to proof in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

After rising, punch down the dough to release the carbon dioxide. Knead for 20 seconds or until smooth again. Form a 23-by-30 centimetre pizza base. Place on a greased baking tray and top with your favourite pizza ingredients. Bake until the toppings are done to your liking and the base is cooked through and golden. Use a pizza wheel or sharp knife to cut your pizza into slices. Serve hot and enjoy in front of the telly with a side of garlic bread.

Should you toss the pizza dough?

We’ve all watched through the window as the pizza chefs toss their dough in the air, but why do they do it? Aside from looking really cool, the motion stretches the dough. This process is a little technical, but is said to be gentler than stretching the dough by hand. When making a traditional pizza dough recipe, this is the go-to method for authenticity.

Rolling out pizza dough with a rolling pin leaves you with a flat surface and no rim for a crust, whereas tugging at the dough can cause it to tear and crumble when cooked. The conclusion is that tossing the dough might leave you with a less-than-perfect circle (at least the first time you try it), but it will give you a classic pizza dough that’s thinner in the middle and thicker towards the crust. Just don’t drop it!
