Ingredients

  • 1 bunch curly kale
  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/4 tsp ground chilli
  • 2 tsp sesame seeds
  • Sea salt flakes, to taste

Method

  1. Step 1

    Preheat oven to 160°C. Line two large oven trays with baking paper.

  2. Step 2

    Remove the kale leaves from the stalks. Discard stalks.

  3. Step 3

    Combine the oils, chilli and sesame seeds in a small bowl.

  4. Step 4

    Place the kale on prepared trays. Drizzle with oil mixture and massage mixture into leaves.

  5. Step 5

    Season with salt. 

  6. Step 6

    Bake for 15-20 mins or until crisp. Cool then serve immediately.

You might have heard about kale chips and been wondering how this vegetable could transform into a tasty snack. You’re about to be pleasantly surprised. When oven roasted, kale turns into a crispy, paper-thin chip, and takes on a toasty flavour similar to nori sheets (seaweed).

It’s deliciously addictive to eat and makes a great alternate crispy snack to potato chips if you’re on the hunt for something more nutritious. While baked kale chips are super tasty simply seasoned with salt, this chilli sesame seasoning takes it to a whole other level.

How to make kale chips

Follow these tips for perfect kale chips:

●       Rinse the kale leaves and pat them dry before seasoning to avoid soggy chips.

●       Use your hands to massage the kale leaves well to break down their bitter flavour.

●       For each baking tray of chips, use ½ tbs oil to massage the leaves.

●      Spread out the leaves on a lined baked tray so the leaves aren’t touching. This ensures even baking and crisping.

●      The oven temperature needs to be low to ensure the kale chips don’t get burnt. Don’t rush the process!

●      Once you remove the chips from the oven, allow them to cool on the baking tray for a few minutes. The chips should be mostly green in colour, with an occasional slight tinge of light brown.

Making kale chips using an airfryer

Place the massaged kale leaves in a single layer in the airfryer basket and cover with an airfryer rack to prevent them from flying around. Cook for a total of 4 minutes at 190°C. Shake the basket once at the 2-minute mark to ensure even cooking.
