Chocolate mousse recipe

Chocolate mousse is a well-loved classic originating in France, a nation known for its decadent desserts. Not only rich and creamy, but also light and fluffy, a good chocolate mousse is completely satisfying but always leaves you wanting more. Known for its light, airy texture - mousse literally translates to foam in French - the decadent treat is traditionally made from cream, eggs, chocolate, butter and sugar. In the traditional method as served in fine dining restaurants, the aerated texture comes from egg whites being whipped into stiff peaks before being folded through the cream and chocolate mixture creating a light and airy mouthfeel.
This easy homemade recipe avoids raw eggs and instead opts for a speedy method that only requires 4 ingredients and relies on incorporating air into the cream by whipping to soft peaks. The recipe then involves mixing melted dark chocolate and hazelnut spread into the chilled, whipped cream for an amazing texture and a rich dessert that can be served immediately.
Mousse can be made with different flavours but it’s hard to go past the original and the best - chocolate. Using good-quality dark chocolate gives this dessert a rich and decadent flavour that will have you coming back for more, every time.

Everything you need for this no-egg chocolate mousse recipe

Mousse is made up of just a few components: a base, an aerator, a sweetener (generally added to the aerator), and a thickener (optional).
Traditional chocolate mousse uses raw eggs and needs to be set in the fridge before serving. This one however uses no eggs, plus there’s no refrigeration required so it can be served immediately. In fact, this recipe is about as simple as it gets, using only cream, good-quality chocolate, hazelnut spread and chocolate bar for decoration.
This rich chocolate mousse is great for entertaining when you don’t want to be in the kitchen all night as you only need four ingredients and fifteen minutes to create a creamy dessert. Also perfect when you just need a chocolate hit, and stat!
If you’ve never made homemade mousse before then this recipe is the perfect one to start. It’s a one-bowl recipe that is so easy to make, it’s practically foolproof.

How to switch things up with your chocolate mousse flavours

This light and fluffy dessert works with a variety of different flavour combinations. To start you can mix up the chocolate type with milk chocolate, white chocolate or a Caramilk if you prefer. If you’re using white chocolate you can switch out the hazelnut spread for Biscoff spread to give it a touch of spice. Once you’ve decided on your base for the mousse you can play around with the toppings too. Top with fresh, frozen or dried berries, sprinkle with crushed nuts or shave over your favourite chocolate block.

How to serve this amazing chocolate mousse recipe

One of the best things about this simple chocolate mousse recipe is how easy it is to serve. When it’s ready, just spoon the mousse into serving glasses or decorative bowls, sprinkle on your topping and serve immediately. Or add a dollop of cream for extra decadence and to create contrast with the rich chocolate flavour.

Now get cooking

Now that you know how easy it is to make, you'll make it any time you’re craving something sweet and start to mix up the flavours. Then once you have this simple recipe down you may wish to move on to mastering the French-style mousse with eggs like Luke Mangan’s white chocolate mousse or a lemon mascarpone moussse. For your dairy-free friends why not try a dairy-free mousse or vegan chocolate and mixed berry mousse. When you just can’t get enough chocolate it’s time to turn to these chocolate desserts, try one and try them all.
