The campfire s’more: A popular American treat

If you’re going camping this summer, the s’mores biscuit is the perfect indulgent campfire snack. But what are s’mores? Made with only three ingredients and ready in almost a flash, s’mores features chocolate, marshmallow and biscuits sandwiched together to create a hand-held treat that can be prepared by almost anyone. It’s the perfect way to elevate the classic roast marshmallow.

Invented and popularised in America, it is said the marshmallow s’mores recipe first appeared in a cookbook in the 1920s. It is also believed to have been seen in a 1927 edition of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America manual. Called ‘Some More’, the treat was later shortened to create the recipe name we now know today.

The combination of marshmallows, chocolate and biscuits is so popular, that we’ve even created different recipes inspired by this iconic flavour pairing. Check out our variations, including s’mores hot chocolate, doughnut s’mores with strawberries and a s'mores waffle sandwich.

S’mores ingredients you’ll need to make this camping classic

The traditional biscuit used in this recipe is called an American ‘Graham cracker’, which is a sweet-flavoured cracker made from graham flour, a type of wheat flour. This variety is not commonly found in Australia so the best biscuits for s’mores is a digestive biscuit as they are both similar. Other biscuits for s’mores can include Arnott’s Marie biscuits, BelVita biscuits or Arnott’s Granita biscuits. For an extra-Aussie spin, you can even create Australian s’mores with Anzac biscuits.

The other ingredients you’ll need for this recipe are marshmallows and your chocolate of choice. Mix it up by choosing Caramilk chocolate, different flavoured marshmallows, adding sliced bananas or strawberries, peanut butter, a drizzling of caramel sauce or even crispy bacon.

How to make s’mores at a campfire: Fire safety

When cooking over an open flame outdoors, it’s important to have an understanding of basic campfire safety. This includes checking weather conditions and being aware of any total fire bans. Never leave your fire unattended and supervise any children or pets.

If you choose to BBQ marshmallows at home, you can simply cook over a gas flame of a BBQ or stovetop.

Serve up and enjoy your biscuits with marshmallow and chocolate after a meal. To complete your camping feast, try other recipes you can cook in the great outdoors like a camp breakfast hash, and camp oven beef stew with damper dumplings – even Hawaiian ham and pineapple sticks.
