How to make focaccia

From combining the ingredients to kneading, shaping and decorating the dough, our easy tips are here to help you make focaccia perfection.

Pouring wet mix into a dry mix bowl

1. Make a well in the middle

Creating a well in the centre of the dry ingredients lets you gradually incorporate the oil and yeast mixture. This helps the ingredients come together more easily and makes a smoother dough.

2. Knead dough until smooth

For perfectly soft and fluffy focaccia, knead the dough with the heel of your hand until smooth and elastic. To test if the dough is ready to bake, prod it with your finger – it should spring back slowly.

3. Cover dough with dimples

To help the dough rise evenly, use the end of a wooden spoon or your fingertip to make small holes all over the focaccia. This reduces the air in the dough and prevents the bread from rising too quickly.

4. Make it a masterpiece

You can leave your focaccia plain or use a variety of vegetables and herbs to decorate it with flowers or patterns. For even cooking, thinly slice the vegetables and arrange them in a single layer over the dough.
